Sancho Churrieria Manila (Part 1)

Welcome to yet another new series on tilfurthernotice! Food Trip Friday, where we’ll be featuring our food finds and favorites, from restaurants, fairs and recipes. Here’s our pilot episode, featuring our favorite dessert place in Maginhawa, Teacher’s Village.

Looking for a cozy food place to hang out in the afternoon for a quick snack or a rustic warm restaurant for dinner? Look no further. We’ve found the best place for you.

The first time we tried Sancho Churrieria Manila’s delectable goodies, we fell in love with the cozy restaurant every since! We kept passing by this resto whenever we hang out at nearby food places, and thus our curiosity grew and grew until finally we decided to give it a try.

The moment we stepped inside, we smelled the aroma of rich, hot chocolate which invited us even more. A very cordial maitre d’ greeted us and led us to our table and gave out the menu. M’s eyes were locked on the dessert display case so we decided to try out the desserts first. We tried out their cream puffs and churros.

The cream puff was baked excellently; the shell was perfectly crunchy, even with the thick caramel glaze. The custard filling was really sweet and scrumptious. We think we can eat a dozen (or more, haha) in just one sitting. The brazo de Mercedez  was also another delightful favorite; we love the fluffy texture and the balanced sweetness.

But who goes to Sancho without trying their famous churros? Of course we had to give them a try. And the golden brown goodness took out breath away. You can even eat them on their own, but the experience is made more complete and perfect with the decadent, rich hot chocolate dip. F thought we should get another dip because we got to finish ours in just a snap. See? We didn’t even have a picture because we gobbled ‘em up right after they were served. Oops.

Their desserts are also affordable. The cream puff costs Php 30.00, the brazo Php 35.00, and churros Php 80/85.00. They also have a selection of cakes with prices ranging from Php 70.00 – Php 110.00. See? Totally affordable, more reason to keep coming back for more.

Looking for Cool Desserts? Try The Icecreamist!

Whenever we head over to Maginhawa St. in Teachers’ Village to grabe a bite, we always take a peek at this futuristic-looking shop at Magiting St. named The Icecreamist.  At first, we did not really know what they were actually selling (of course we knew it could be ice cream, but the interior looks really different that it could be selling something else!) because we usually pass by there when it is still closed. But that one time at night when we passed by there, the place was filled with a lot of people, and there was some kind of smoke coming from inside the store. Aha, curious foodies that we are, we did some research first (because we may not really be sure that it is a food place hahaha) and found out that it was a dessert shop which offers a lot of interesting items. Thus right away we have decided to try it for ourselves.

The inside of the shop felt like a laboratory, with the tanks, masks and equipment, complete with the menu presented as the periodic table of elements! Ooooh interesting. We could not really decode it on our own, so we kept asking their servers about the stuff on the menu. Ever heard of frozen milkshake? If you did, then have you heard of one prepared with the aid of liquid nitrogen? How about smores? Surely you have heard of it hahaha, but do you know what Dragon’s breath is? Wee so many interesting things to try! They also have Ice Blended Coffee,  Teashake, Yogurt Shake and Munchkin Lollies . Ever since that day, we kept coming back whenever we were free or simply needed a nice, cold dessert fix. And when we say cold, we mean freezing cold. Not your regular dessert indeed.

We frequently get Strawberrry Frozen Milkshake and Nutella Frozen Milkshake, plus the Dragon’s breath smores (but you have to try their bacon pocorn, too! So amazing.). They are served really, really smoking cold. How they prepare them is also very interesting to watch, and is very unique, too.

Their version of smores is one with graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows sandwiched together on a stick. You dip this into their mixture for a few seconds (15, I think), and what happens will surprise you. Then you take in the whole thing (biting will cause it to break into pieces, which might destroy the experience) and then you will understand what they meant by Dragon’s breath. Hehehe.

Buddy’s Pancit Lucban and Longganisa

Looking for your regular Filipino food favorites? Well, Buddy’s may have them on the menu, but their food surely tastes more than regular. In fact, because their food is so homey and delightful, we have been coming back whenever we can.

Buddy’s features well-loved Filipino dishes from across the country (plus a few other extra food items), but they are well-kown for their Lucban pancit. I rarely eat pancit as a person, but only Buddy’s can make me give pancit a chance because they’ve got extremely flavorful ones, totally different from those that I’ve tasted in my whole life. Seriously. :) Their food is also surprisingly affordable! Most of the items on their menu are also good for sharing. Isn’t it so amazing, you can enjoy the different flavors of the Philippines all in one place, in very good quality, without having to spend so much?

The interior of the restaurant is also something new. It’s got a fiesta-esque feel to it, with the kiping or edible rice paper leaves, wood details and paintings depicting Filipino ways of celebrating. The slightly dim lighting against the yellow walls make it feel homier, thus eating is made more enjoyable.

Our favorites include bulalo, sisig, Lucban longganiza and chopsuey. Oh, and their pizza is amazing, too. Never, ever leave Buddy’s without trying any, or better, all of those. Oh yeah, almost forgot, for dessert you should try their cassava cake. I remember getting two of them only for myself because grabe it is so deliciously sweet!

You can get a taste of Buddy’s flavors at Makati (the Link, near Landmark, Glorietta), the branch we frequent the most. You have to come way before meal time because the line can get really long (see, because their food is really good), but it is really worth the wait. Then again, they are very systematic and accommodating, and soon enough you’ll find yourself having difficulty to choose from among what they have to offer, because you’d really want to try them all! They also have branches near Kalayaan Ave, Makati; Market! Market! at The Fort and Timoq, Quezon City. :)
